    The town was founded by Juan Baham and was originally named Coquille in 1800. In 1810 it was incorporated into the United States and was named for President James Madison.

The river is approximately 70 miles long and flows through Covington and Madisonville to the Lake Pontchartrain which is about two miles south of Madisonville.
