    Metairie Real Estate

Metairie is the first suburb of New Orleans and is located on the south shore of Lake Ponchartrain. It is the largest community in Jefferson Parish and would be Louisiana’s fourth largest city if it were incorporated.

In the 1720’s the first Europeans to settle Metairie were French Settlers. They settled in an area known as Tchoupitoulas that later became known as Metairie Ridge. This was a natural levee formed by an ancient branch of the Mississippi River. Metairie is the French term for a small tenant farm that paid the landlord with a share of produce, also known as sharecropping.

In the 1910’s an electric streetcar was installed running along what is now Metairie Road. This opened up the area to greater development.

Today there are many restaurants, places to shop, a large park, and recreational parks for families to enjoy. With New Orleans on one side and The Lake Ponchartrain Causeway on the Northside Metairie is a highly sought after place to reside.
